What is Food Services?
Many often wonder what is Food Services and how is it funded? The Roaring Fork Food Services provides approximately 2,000 lunches and 600 breakfasts each day. Our district has 5,589 students, 41% of whom qualify for meals at a free of reduced rate. That means, 447,200 reimbursable meals are provided by Food Services, annually. The Food Services' funding is separate from the District's general fund. It is often referred to as "Fund 21" or the "Foodservice Fund." Nutrition Services operates on a break-even budget, meaning all funding comes from meal sales and meal reimbursements.

As you're likely well aware, Food Services has gone through a bit of a makeover in the past couple of school years. In an effort to make "Nutrition our Mission" we have revised our menus to provide students with the healthiest possible meals. This has included a number of innovative steps that we are very proud of. We have returned to scratch cooking in an effort to elimiate highly-processed foods. In addition, we have added fresh fruit and vegetable bars to every school to increase the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables.

The National School Lunch Program was established under the National School Lunch Act, which was signed into law by President Harry S. Truman in 1946.

The National School Lunch Program is a federally assisted meal program operating under the guidance of the Federal Government, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Nutrition Division of the Colorado Department of Education.

It was and continues to be the intent of Congress that nutritious meals be available to all school children regardless of the household's ability to pay.

The Nutrition Service Department of Roaring Fork School District is a part of the National School Lunch Program and complies with USDA program regulations and mandates.
