RFSD and the City of Glenwood Springs have been working together for the past two years to complete a land exchange to:

  • Provide for the redevelopment of the Glenwood Springs Elementary School (GSES) site to include new playground areas and youth recreational fields along its western boundary and
  • Convert a portion of Vogelaar Park (baseball field) to be used for non-recreational purposes, which will most likely include multi-family housing.

This planning was the result of public processes regarding the re-development of the area at the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Colorado rivers conducted by the City, and RFSD's 2014 facility master plan process.

Because Vogelaar Park's use is restricted to recreation purposes under a federal 6F designation, the 6F designation needs to be transferred to the new recreation area to the west and north of GSES.  This process requires an environmental assessment, which includes a 30 day comment period to better understand the level of public support and any concerns that may surround the conversion.

You can learn more about the conversion in the two documents included below.  Please share any comments or questions by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots.
