BES continued the long standing tradition of honoring author Dr. Seuss during I Love to Read month. Elementary schools throughout the district offered extending reading time in the morning before school.

NBC Nightly News came to GSES February 12 to film a segment about former GSES student Chandra Starr and her Million Penny Project for Growing Food Forward. Nico Polar, a fourth grader at Glenwood Springs Elementary School, is fitted with a microphone by NBC producer Steve Louie.

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING AT CRESCrystal River Elementary School students had the opportunity to experience one of winter’s best outdoor activities this winter: cross country skiing. Inspired by PE teacher Marty Madsen, this is the only PE department in the district that has incorporated cross country skiing into scheduled PE time.

During I Love to Read month, Sopris Elementary School encouraged students to become reading athletes by challenging the whole school to read at least 600,000 minutes in the month of February
THREE RFSD STUDENTS AWARDED EVANS SCHOLARSHIPS
The Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship is a full tuition and housing college scholarship for golf caddies from the Evans Scholars Foundation. Selected applicants must have a strong caddie record, excellent grades, outstanding character and demonstrated financial need. The winners from RFSD were Kyle Bruna, RFHS, and Alexandra Revilla Serrano and Tim Johnson, BHS. Alexandra and Tim are pictured here.

At Glenwood Springs Elementary School, Olympic spirit seemed to dominate the theme during I Love to Read month. GSES aimed for gold by setting a collective goal of 1,000 books.
